Fulkerson is Worth My Time

Fulkerson is one of my favorite composition-rhetoricians, aka compositionists.

Here are his 3 ways to make a successful research project:
1) Choose a Topic that matters--To You;
2) Make Your Research Thorough (and Current);
3) Remember that Research Papers are Arguments.

He also writes about 5 ways projects can go wrong:
1) Insufficient Research;
2) Superficial Resources;
3) The Pro/Con Summary;
4) The Imitative Narrative Structure; and
5) The Data Dump.

Obviously, everyone who reads this post has experienced at least one or more of these.

So...?

It is true. I think that sometimes students want to write a good and thorough research paper, but with assignments for more than one class, they do not have the time to devote as much attention as they would like to give the research paper; therefore, because of lack of time they resort to the “data dump” paper.
